Today (although technically it was yesterday, since it's january 7th instead of 6th. but I'm still awake so I'm calling the shots here) is day 19 of 50. the prompt is "whatever tickles your fancy" well right now what tickles my fancy is my fabulous little sister (read: younger sister, since she is only a year younger than me) and the fact that today is her birthday (again, today is january 6th).
Lara is a fabulous person who is going to school for psychology in the hopes of helping people one day. I'm not sure if that means social work or private practice or what, but she will do well with whatever she decides. Lara, unlike most human beings, will tell you what she thinks without a) sugar coating it b) taking all your feelings into account so as to soften the blow c) lying. Unlike most human beings, Lara is honest with you. When I am in a social conundrum that I am not sure how to deal with, Lara is always there with the most practical as well as sensible advice. Not only that, but she will let you know when what you think you should do is a stupid idea. Clearly, Lara has helped me with a lot of conundrums. Maintaining a logical approach to things in the face of the chaos of emotions is difficult, but Lara manages to do so without being a party pooper. I'm pretty sure I'd have made some social faux-pas in my time as an adult without Lara to help me out in my decision making. She is, by far, the most selfless and sweet person I know. I'm sure if she reads this she will be embarrassed as well as angry that I posted about her on my blog on the internet, but that's just too bad. the world needs to know how awesome she is. Sure, we can have our disagreements (and they are totally irrational most of the time) but I know, even in the moments when I am quite upset with her, that she is a fabulous wonderful person who I will always be able to rely on for good and sensible advice. Whether I choose to use this advice to my advantage is another story (most of the time I do). But besides her sensible rationality, Lara is super fun. It was her 21st birthday tonight, and my sisters Dina and Amanda as well as my brother in law Michael and our cousin Leslie took her to the bar and she made the best of a new situation. She'd never been to a bar, and we chose to take her to John's in mystic. Instead of complaining about how boring it was (it's a thursday so not much is going on except the regulars being there) she just soldiered on and had a great time.
I think Michael is right, Lara's a saint. That girl gives up her spring break where she could be kicking back and relaxing before the craziness of the end of the year and goes to work for habitat for humanity in south carolina. She's stayed in a church with creepy bathrooms and an even creepier mannequin and made the best of a very interesting situation. I am gushing about my little sister because I am proud of her and because I love her. It takes a lot to give up a week of fun to go and build a house for someone to live in. Not only that, but to put oneself in a foreign culture so as to help them (and from what she's told me it is very much like a foreign place there). Anyway, I love my sister. She's awesome, funny and fabulous. So I'm going to end this post with that. Day 19 was about my fabulous little sister. Tomorrow's post will be a letter to someone who changed my life. I guess it's good I'll have all day to figure that one out :)
Til' Later today,
MeggyB
