The prompt for today is to talk about my favorite television show. I don't really watch TV, but the shows that I do watch are awesome. My most favorite show is Breaking Bad. "Whaaat? Not True Blood?!" no, but it's an incredibly close second. Eric Northman makes the show for me, since the books are so much better than the tv series. Anyway, we're not here to talk about vampires. We're here to talk about crystal meth.
The premise of Breaking Bad is a simple and common occurance in America. What do you do when you're diagnosed with cancer? Walt, a chemistry teacher who works two jobs to support his family and is an average enough guy, is diagnosed with lung cancer having never smoked a single cigarette in his entire life. The token "this isn't fair, what do I do?" reaction, Walt realizes that he needs to come up with a way to make a lot of money for his family before he dies. He has no idea how long he will survive, so he's looking for a get rich quick type deal. Walt's brother in law, Hank, is a DEA agent. Walt goes on a ride along and sees one of his former students escaping the meth lab that the DEA is busting that day. Walt goes inside and sees what is being made and how (using mason jars and all kinds of non-chemistry set instruments) and realizes this is what he can do. Walt confronts Jesse, the student that escaped the meth lab, and offers to not go to the DEA if Jesse teaches him how to make meth. Walt was a chemist before he went into teaching, and he is smarter than the average bear, which is why the meth he makes is almost 100% pure. So, Walt has his manufacturer name of Hisenberg. There's a mix of family drama as well, since Walt doesn't tell his family he's now making meth in an RV in the middle of the desert. There are three seasons, and every episode of every season has been interesting. All of the characters are well developed and remain in character throughout the series so far. Jesse is a messed up little cretin with family issues and a drug problem in the beginning, but by the end of the 3rd season you can tell he's a good person deep down.
If you are looking for a show that is interesting, funny, sad, dramatic and suspenseful this is the show for you :)
